Overheard at Freddies

A young couple at Fred Meyer tonight:

Her: You're such a boy!
Him: And?
Her: And I hate that.
Me: *snicker*

I think I would have done more than snicker. I am a mom of boys and I grew up in a family of boys. I have friends who have a hard time dealing with their sons and do much better with their daughters. No little boy should ever have to feel bad about being "all boy!" Maybe this instance wasn't that bad, but it's got me fuming anyway. Sorry, I just had to say that.

Well, bless you. I was a difficult boy, and I was so relieved that we had a girl instead of a little me. I don't think my mom liked me being "all boy". :)

In this case, I don't think the guy was wounded by the girl's comment. It seems to me that in most relationships, a guy has to be secure enough in himself so that when someone complains that he's male, he can shrug or roll his eyes and say, "yeah, and?". You are what you are.

I think most women like that in a guy. They want a man secure enough that he doesn't freak out over every little thing they say, whether intentionally or not, and yet still sensitive enough that he does listen when she says something he needs to hear.

It's tough to know sometimes whether you should take something to heart or not. This particular exchange made me smile. :)
