The Belt of Venus

It's not what you're thinking. Especially you!

This photo of the Belt of Venus over the Valley of the Moon (a winemaking region near the Napa Valley) is a beautiful shot illustrating the pink band that sometimes happens just before dawn or just after sunset. I've long admired it, but never known it was referred to as the Belt of Venus. You learn something every day!

I never knew that had a name. What if the entire sky turns pink, or orange or red, is it still called the same thing? Rather than a belt, it's more like a curtain. Would it be the Curtain Of Venus? What if there are several pink stripes across the sky? Is that called The Belts Of Venus? :)

So lovely. I've heard the name, but stayed ignorant of the definition, apparently, and never knew THAT'S what it was. How funny.

I've captured a few shots in my flickr stream that have some beltiness (?!), I think, maybe:

just after sunset

just before sunrise
