The Aretha Franklin Secret?

My friend Bal just wrote a book on how to have a successful marriage. (He's been married almost as long as Connie and I have been.) So tonight, when another friend mentioned that she was about to celebrate her 25th wedding anniversary, I asked what her secret was. (I know what our secrets are, but I'm always curious what other people consider key to marital success, especially since reading Bal's book.)

What was her answer? Respect. They respect each other. He's free to be himself, and she's free to be herself. Their marriage has its roots in a night 25 years ago when they stayed up until three in the morning. Talking. Sounds right to me.
