Meals on Wheels

Monday night we dined at Dandy's Drive-In in Bend. A blast from the past, Dandy's is a 50's-style drive-in restaurant. Eating there is like living in Happy Days world. But no Fonz.

We pulled into one of the 18 parking spots, and soon a fresh-faced blue-eyed blonde in tight jeans and a pony-tail came gliding our way on old-fashioned roller skates. She was one of three similarly-outfitted waitresses handling the cars that shift. Cars came and went while we were there, but at any given time around eight or nine cars could be found.

There were many burgers on the menu, and malts and shakes, but Connie ordered a fish sandwich and I a chicken sandwich; both were good but unremarkable. We enjoyed the novelty and convenience of having our order taken at the car and delivered to the car without any waiting in line or sitting in uncomfortable seats. Afterwards, we simply dumped the bag and wrappers in the can by the car. No cleanup!

I have to admit that the time passed quickly as we awaited our order. The waitresses were all good skaters, gliding back and forth with their hands full. They didn't stop before entering the restaurant, they simply slowed and pushed the door open when they hit it, a ballet of the burger babes. We'll be back.

I wanted to try Dandy's the whole year I was there but just...never got to it somehow. Went to Pilot Butte Drive-In, but that was lame. Okay, I'm going to Dandy's as soon as I get back.

Does that Shell station still have the attendants wearing those cute old fashioned uniforms? I love Bend.

Sounds like a lot of fun. We have just one burger drive-in left in the area that I know of. Unfortunately, the girls just walk rather than skate. :(
