Who Are You?

Prove it!

The Department of Homeland Security held a town hall meeting in California Tuesday regarding Real ID. They're trying to force the states to implement what's basically a national ID system using drivers licenses. They claim this will stop terrorists.

A buddy of mine in California told me recently about an experience he'd just had at the Department of Motor Vehicles. It was time to renew the registration on his car, but the framistat had just broken and he couldn't drive it. So he goes to the DMV to list the car as non-operational.

"It's too late," the clerk told him. Huh? "You have to file for non-operational status within 30 days of getting your registration notice. It's been 60 days."

"But it just broke down, it wasn't non-operational when I got the notice but it's non-operational now," he told her.

"I'm sorry, those are the rules."

"Okay, then I guess I'll have to sell it."

"I'm sorry, sir, but you can't sell it unless it's registered."

You may be thinking that this obstructive behavior is a rare occurrence, but I can attest that the "civil servants" at the California DMV are often this way. My buddy's been around the block a few times, and while he's frustrated, he knows what the DMV is like and he's determined to get the car out of his hair.

"Okay, fine, then I'll go ahead and register it," he tells her.

"I'm sorry, sir, but you need a smog check before you can register it."

"I can't get a smog check," he tells her, "the car won't run!"

"I'm sorry, sir."

Oh, man! I can relate to the DMV headaches!

This is a very short summary, regarding the DMV's bureaucratic red tape surrounding the Acura, which Rusty's cousin gave me out of the goodness of his heart.

For Want of a Lien Release
For want of a lien release, the title was withheld;
For want of the title, the registration was denied;
For want of the registration, the tags expired;
For want of the tags, the smog certificate expired;
For want of the smog certificate, the registration was denied,
And all for the want of a lien release.

The actual circumstances were much more complicated, including citations for --- take a guess --- expired tags along with a required cameo court appearance. What fun! Not!

The final outcome, however, is that I acquired another car and the Acura was donated to a charitable organization.

Yes, I was unable to sell the vehicle without a current registration, but I was able to donate it.

LOL When my friend asked what he was supposed to do, the clerk suggested he donate it to a children's charity. I wonder if that's a stock answer.

I'm convinced that Bush's social security number is 600-60-0006.

And...

I'm betting this mark can be found on his head. It's the head without the hair.

I believe the "DMV attitude" is a requirement of all "civil servants". These folks are obviously below par in the IQ arena, but they know they got you by the short hairs.

Our DMV office is literally plastered with signs such as "Verbal Abuse Will Not Be Tolerated", etc. I've never seen any business or government facility with such signs. Maybe one day they will figure out that THEY are the problem.

You should walk in wearing a button that reads, "Bureaucratic abuse will not be tolerated!" :)
